Rory McIlroy will be among the prominent golfers to watch when the 2018 Players Championship gets under way at TPC Sawgrass at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida on Thursday.

McIlroy will face strong competition, though, as Jason Day has a comfort level at Sawgrass that could prove decisive. Dustin Johnson should also be in the mix, given both his natural talent and status as world No. 1.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy will need a plan for dealing with the tricky course at Sawgrass. It's not something he's often found an answer for, per Philip Reid of The Irish Times:

"For McIlroy the course, one which requires that the strongest club in his bag, the driver, to be ignored for much of a round in favour of a two-iron, has taken some getting used to: indeed, he missed the cut with regularity on initial acquaintance, and it was only from 2013 on that he has managed to get any payback from the demand for patience."
It's taken him time, but McIlroy has steadily been getting used to conditions in Florida. He can play the type of precision game needed to navigate the course without too many bogeys.

The 29-year-old still remains far from the vintage McIlroy who wowed fans earlier in his career. Yet he has been slowly clawing back some of his best form, winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this year.

If McIlroy's short game is on point, he's sure to comfortably make the cut and stay near the top of the leaderboard for most of the tournament before eventually missing out on first.

Jason Day

As a previous winner at Sawgrass, Day can handle the course better than most. Rob Bolton told the PGA Tour official website how familiarity can help: "Course success is a bonus at The Players because nothing trumps current confidence when TPC Sawgrass is poised to erode it."

Not only does Day know his way around Sawgrass, he is also in a winning habit after finishing first at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this month. Day carded a final-round score of 69 by showing off the range of shots and ability to hold his nerve in key moments common in the 30-year-old's career.
Just as important, Day is in peak form with the putter. In fact, the Australian is compiling the best statistical season ever when stepping up to putt, according to Alex Myers of GolfDigest.com.

Day is paired with former Players winners Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia, two more golfers who know the course well. Expect Day to be at the front of the list for most of the tournament, but he'll ultimately finish as runner up.

Dustin Johnson

Johnson's ability should never be doubted, even if his temperament and effort have been questioned. Golf instructor Butch Harmon told Damon Hack of Morning Drive (h/t Golfweek's The Forecaddie) Johnson needs to put more work in.

Harmon noted how Johnson hasn't been quite the same player since he suffered injury on the eve of last year's Masters. While there's more than a little truth to the sentiment, the 33-year-old still tops the global rankings for a reason.
